Juan J. Maldonado became a science educator in 2008, and since then has devoted his professional career to model a great lifelong learner and use his educator skills to enhance the Parent University experience. His main current role is to manage and cultivate partnerships and resources to support parent engagement strategies and create meaningful learning opportunities. With a strong digital development background, diverse knowledge of learning applications, and fluent in both English and Spanish literacy, one of Mr. Maldonado’s goals is to create a positive impact on today’s digital divide evident throughout Chicago’s most needed neighborhoods.
Before his campus assignment at Clemente High School, he served many volunteer hours at Spencer Technology’s Parent University working with both English and Spanish-speaking parents. It is here where his idea of impacting the digital divide spawned and classes like Cyber Spanish, and teaching parents how to support students with science online resources in educative social media sites like Edmodo, were first created. Mr. Maldonado is no stranger to Parent University. As an educator, he saw first-hand how empowering a parent with educative resources, empowered students to grow in academics.
Mr. Maldonado’s favorite hobbies are in nature, music, and culinary. One of his most favorite places to visit is Starved Rock National Park, and its hiking trails not too far from Chicago located near LaSalle. As a way to balance his thoughts every now and then, he revisits one of his most favorite ways to pass time and that is to play guitar. Have you heard of the House of Blues on Dearborn? As a novice bass member of a Spanish Alternative Rock Band he once performed at this venue as an opening act for Julieta Venegas an international pop singer from Spain. Finally, exploring old or new foods is a good way to get to know Mr. Maldonado. A favorite place he enjoys frequently visiting is a unique burger joint called Kuma’s Korner in the Avondale neighborhood.
Today, you find Mr. Maldonado floating around the city supporting FACE2, and Parent Universities, but spends most of his time between Humboldt Park, and the community he was born, and raised in the Little Village neighborhood. You’ll actively see him finding ways for people to find opportunities to better themselves, as a way to honor those in his life who once helped him. Come to Clemente’s Parent University. You’ll find more than opportunities, you’ll find support in a friendly environment.
